The wonders of modern publishing means that I was able to read this amazing Russian classic in a Marathi translation and I am glad for it. The story revolves around a young boy named Seryozha whose mother gets remarried. His stepfather turns out to be a nice man and gifts him a bicycle. The book shares the boy’s simple adventures with his friends, his neighbours, his first brush with death, the birth of his stepbrother, the beauty of the snowy Russian landscape and his relationship with his stepfather. Towards the end, he falls sick and dreads being left behind as his parents decide to move elsewhere and leave him behinds to join them when he recovers.
It’s a heartwarming story told well and make you nostalgic for the days of childhood.
